A Final Fall Reading List (and a dog)

September is here, with its breezes and blue skies and back-to-school energy. It’s good to be home. It’s good to finally unpack the car, and it’s so, so good to look at my new pile of must-read books!

Lola, who says she will NEVER be left behind again, and the final fall-reading book pile.

What an amazing trip we had. Thirteen States, nine bookstore visits, and countless new and old friends.

We set out on the Indie Bookstore Roadtrip to investigate the state of the Independent bookstore in America, meet booksellers, and sign books. We found not only wonderful stores, but wonderful towns around each of those stores and wonderful people choosing to spend their time and money supporting those stores. We were surprised, at first at just how COOL the towns were that we visited – and then, when we thought about it, not surprised at all. It seems a great bookstore means a great town, or maybe the other way around – however it comes to be, we saw it over and over again as we drove out of towns swearing that we’d be back soon to visit not only the bookstores but the people that we met.

Here is a list of the bookstores, in the order in which we visited them, that made us welcome, promoted the book, and generally showed us an amazing time:

Boulder, CO: Boulder Bookstore; Telluride, Co: Between the Covers; Taos, NM: Moby Dickens; Edwards, CO: The Bookworm; Oklahoma City: Full Circle Books; Oxford, MISS: Square Books; Asheville, NC: Malaprops & Spellbound; Shelburne, VT: Flying Pig Bookstore.
